Lake Texoma was formed when the Denison Dam dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938 and was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The building of the dam began in 1939 and was completed in 1944.
While the primary purpose of the dam was flood control, it also served to generate hydroelectric power and provide a reliable water supply for the region. Lake Texoma officially impounded with the completion of the Denison Dam in 1944, creating the expansive reservoir that we know today.
